Torsten Spies, born in Siegen in 1974, is a self-taught artist. Following theatrical training under Roberto Ciulli at the Theater an der Ruhr and a doctorate in philosophy, during which he engaged with idealistic concepts ranging from Leibniz to Hegel, he developed a distinctive and powerful artistic visual language. His works draw upon archaic forms, signs, and symbol systems, translating them into a contemporary, abstract-expressive idiom.

His artistic practice is rooted in an intuitive, experimental approach to simple, primal creative methods. Through the deliberate combination of chance, repetition, and gestural intervention, he creates multi-layered compositions possessing an immediate, energetic presence.

Torsten Spies has developed a unique visual world that interweaves elements of Art Brut, Art Informel, and Pop Art. Moving between abstraction and figuration, his work opens up a distinctive aesthetic cosmos where cultural archetypes, personal associations, and contemporary visual signs converge. He is particularly interested in the tension between the deliberate artistic gesture and the process of image creation, which cannot be fully controlled.

His artistic influences include Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, and Günther Uecker. Their diverse approaches to serial processes, gestural abstraction, materiality, and immediate expression serve as key reference points for Spies’s own artistic practice.

Torsten Spies lives and works in Cologne, Germany.
